Paint or Replace?

If your cabinet boxes and doors are solid, painting them can give your kitchen a completely new look for a fraction of the cost of new cabinets, without the demolition, the long lead times or weeks without a working kitchen.

Painting is usually a good fit when:

  • The cabinet boxes and doors are solid wood or sound MDF
  • You like your layout and just want a new color or a cleaner, updated look
  • You want the kitchen back in service quickly

Replacing may make more sense when:

  • Cabinets are water-damaged, sagging or falling apart
  • You want to change the layout of the kitchen
  • Doors are a peeling laminate or thermofoil that won't hold paint well

We'll give you an honest answer at the estimate. If painting isn't the right call for your cabinets, we'll tell you.

Prep Is What Makes It Last

Kitchen cabinets get handled every day and collect grease and grime you can't always see. Paint only lasts if it bonds, so prep is most of the job:

  1. Remove and label. Doors and drawer fronts are removed and labeled so everything goes back exactly where it came from. Most doors go to our shop for spraying; some are sprayed at the house.
  2. Protect the kitchen. Counters, floors, appliances and the surrounding rooms are covered and masked.
  3. Degrease and clean. Every surface is thoroughly degreased and cleaned.
  4. Sand. Surfaces are scuff-sanded so the primer can grip.
  5. Repair. Dings, dents and gouges are filled and sanded smooth.
  6. Prime. A bonding primer suited to cabinets goes on before any color.
  7. Spray the finish. Color coats are sprayed for a smooth, even finish without brush marks.
  8. Reinstall and walkthrough. Doors and hardware go back on, adjusted, and we walk the kitchen with you.

A Smooth, Sprayed Finish

We spray cabinet doors, drawer fronts and frames for a smooth, consistent finish that looks factory-made, not hand-brushed. Doors are usually sprayed in our shop, where conditions are controlled, and sometimes at your house when that works better.

Want a particular color or brand? We'll work with the paint you choose, including high-end lines like Farrow & Ball and Fine Paints of Europe.

Durable, Cabinet-Grade Coatings

Wall paint isn't made for cabinets. We use cabinet-grade coatings designed to hold up to daily handling, cleaning and kitchen moisture.

Like most cabinet finishes, the coating keeps hardening for a few weeks after the job. We'll tell you how to treat your cabinets during that time so the finish cures properly.

Typical Timeline

Most cabinet jobs take 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the size of the kitchen and the number of doors. Your kitchen is usually available to you every afternoon while the work is underway. We'll confirm the schedule with your estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is painting cheaper than replacing my cabinets?
In most kitchens, yes, by a wide margin, as long as the cabinets are in good shape. We'll give you a free written estimate so you can compare.

Will the paint chip or peel?
How long a cabinet finish lasts comes down to prep and the coating. That's why we degrease, sand and prime before spraying cabinet-grade coatings. Like any painted surface, it can chip under a hard knock, and small touch-ups are possible.

Can I use my kitchen while you work?
Usually, yes. On most cabinet jobs your kitchen is available to you every afternoon while the work is underway.

How long does it take?
Most cabinet jobs take 1 to 2 weeks. We'll confirm the schedule with your estimate.
